Totem pole- Painters

For the last few days Village 22 have been painting their designs on the totem pole and tracing their designs. We have all enjoyed doing this.

Totem Pole Sanding

As soon as village 22 purchased the totem pole they started sanding the pole. After 1 day they purchased masks and sanded safely they used putty to fill holes.

Totem pole-permission

Last week on Monday the project managers Lydia,Hilary,Jacob and Keegan went to Mr Sibsons office to get permission for the totem pole to start construction. The project managers needed to get permission for safety where to put the totem pole and it it could start construction. After talking about all of the hazards Mr Sibson said it is a fabolous idea and Village 22 started construction.

Totem pole-Shoppers

Shoppers-we went to Dulux to get some paint for the pictures that we are going to put on the totem pole. The man who was helping as pick the right type of paint but then he accidentally tipped over a pot of paint. We got 9 pots free and we had to pay for one testpot for $36 Glen donated most of the paint

Shoppers-A group of shoppers went to Bunnings warehouse and got rubber gloves, masking tape and masks and some cement and Rose gave us a discount.

Work Groups

Shoppers- buying equipment needed. The first job was to find where we could buy some poles. Daniel and Ben rang several places and discovered Place Makers and Bunnings had what we wanted. Jin, Gabby and Lydia went with Sue to buy them on Monday at lunchtime. We also go sandpaper and Puty to make the poles ready for painting.
Many people helped fix the holes and sand the poles down.

Totem pole

V22 is making 2 totem poles to represent the cultures in our school . When children start our school from other countries they will see the poles and recognise symbols and pictures from their culture. We want them to feel welcome when they arrive at FOS.We are hoping that it will be finished by the end of the year. That is 4 weeks!
Our first job was to organise ourselves into a work team. We chose 4 project managers. They are Lydia, Hilary, Keegan and Jacob (lying on their side).
They asked us what jobs we wanted then put us into work groups.

Earthquake Disaster

Houses Rumbling

Beds Shaking

Books Falling

Glass Breaking

People telling each other to calm down

You might think that it's all over... but is it

Shaking Horror

Wake-up, in bed
pull covers over my head
breaking sounds all around
shaking, rumbling from the ground
It all stops, I think gosh,
what on earth was that
The shakiest most rumbley earthquake,
Christchurch has ever had

Earthquake by Joe

One Saturday morning it was all quiet until BOOM an earthquake hit. Things were falling off shelves and out of cupboards. The noise was unbearable with the shaking. The power went out. We couldn’t see. After shocks rattled the house. This is what an earthquake is like.

Earth quake poem

Shaking buildings

things breaking

everyone frightened

blocked off roads

dogs barking

cats are missing

my sister is going mental!

Mr Norton's Boulder

Paul sent this photo to me. It is a boulder that rolled down the hill from Castle Rock. It was lucky there had been rain because the mud managed to stop it rolling into Heathcote homes. You can see how big it is when you look at the man sitting on top of it.

shake rattle and roll

sky rumbling

fear growing

power escaping

glass smashing

stop start

off on

after shocks still shaking

Earthquake

House wobbling,
Books falling,
Ground rumbling,
Fear growing as I run to the doorway
yay its over ..or is it.

Second Earthquake- Wednesday

Hi Everyone
Wow that one this morning was scary, wasn't it! Thanks for the great poems coming through. I now look forward to opening up my emails. We have 3 poems so far. I wonder if we will get 28 before we meet at school again. Unfortunately we are now behind with our reductive printmaking. I hope we can get an extension on our deadline for the calendar art. We can't rush this type of art. If you are bored you might like to look at some of these activities.

bbc.co.uk- check out the English site. There are many games there that will help you with punctuation, writing sentences etc

Keep the poetry going. Try to create an image in the mind of the reader. Use simile, personification or compare the earthquake to something else.

Practice recalling your times tables quickly. Search for some games to help you.

If you have garageband you could make a soundscape to play when you read your poetry.

If you have powerpoint you could find some images to back your poem. Some programmes allow you to have photos fade in and out with the text in front. Have a play with animating the text. Bring the poem in line for line.

If you have any other ideas please post them in our blog for others to see.
Take care
Sue
Surprise Quake
I wake up
Its dark, but daylight outside.
Rattle, things on my draws are shaking like marbles in a glass jar.
I get under my bed, scramble quickly.
The rumble dies.
Shaking I get out from under my safe cover.

Doomsday

Earthquake
House shaking
Ground rumbling
Scared of dying
Race downstairs
Jump on Mum
Said, "we're done"
Safe and sound
Or are we...

Lucy's Earthquake Poem

Earthquake surprises us
Around us shaking
Roaring sounds
Tapping at the window
Helpless feelings
Quick run
Under the door frame
All together we are safe
Keep filling the water bottles
Earth is powerful.

Sue's Wobbly Chimney

Here is a photo of our chimney before it was pulled down yesterday, brick by brick. I'm pleased it was taken down because that aftershock last night would have certainly seen it crashing through our roof.

Do you like chocolate? I know I do. That's why this book is such a good one. Hi,my name is Fergus,I'm here to tell about the book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Great Glass Elevator'. Charlie Bucket comes from a poor family, who can't afford to get everything they want. One day he finds himself a golden ticket which allows him to spend a day in Mr Willy Wonker's Chocolate Factory. Charlie chooses his granddad to go with him to the factory. Along with 4 other children they explore many different rooms and one by one they disappear. In the end Mr Willy Wonker blasts through the roof of Charlie's house and asks them to come and live in the factory with him. Unfortunately when they take off Mr Wonker presses a button too late and they blast off into space. Want to know what happens next? It's yours to find out.

Festival Plays- Day of the Dead First Play

Hi all blog readers,
Tuesday 1st of June was our first official play.
It was really fun.
My favourite part is the face paint scene.
I'm glad I'm in 'Day of the Dead' because it's such an interesting festival.

Festival plays- Day of the dead

When I first came back from Malaysia, I was so behind track! I'll tell you about the number of things I had to do with the festival plays. My first priority of the 2 priorities was to choose what to actually do. My first choice was Day of the dead, which I eventually chose. But the first thing that I regretted was that it is from Mexico. I actually thought that it was Qingming, the Day of the dead from China. Anyway, I got over it. The second priority of mine was to learn my lines. The problem with learning my lines was that I myself had been to Malaysia and I had less time to learn my lines(my estimate for how much time I had to learn my lines was about 6 days)

The first time I performed the play was so nerve racking. Not only had I had to act myself I had to wave the butterflies around which was hard work. YOU may think ''why would this school boy think it would be hard to wave a set of paper butterflies'' but you are wrong! I have to wave the set of butterflies without being seen, and I have to make the audience be able to
see the butterflies clearly. Anyway, I'm looking forward to performing to the next class!

DIWALI PLAY

We performed a play which we created, called Diwali. It was fun. I got tired of talking after practising several times. We needed to practise a lot so that we were ready for the senior Assembly. My favourite parts were the party poppers and the story of Rama.

Diwali! by Henry

It was really fun preparing the props for the assembly performance. It was really frustrating practising, going over things again and again and adding in important stuff right before the performance.

Day of the Dead by Fergus

My experience in Day of the Dead was very weird but I learnt a lot of new stuff like they make sugar skulls and flythe kites to attract their ancestors. They set up the graveyard and I learnt that they don't sleep in their bed their ancestors do. So they sleep on the floor and they set up a big feast outside their house because they believe that their ancestors eat it.
